Ranking question

A rating scale question allows users to select answers that carry different values. Users can choose from a range of options based on their preferences, typically in response to questions seeking opinions, attitudes, or perceptions. This type of question is often used in surveys with Likert scale questions or statements, where the options might range from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.” You may want to assign fewer points to “strongly disagree” and more points to “strongly agree” to quantify the data.

To add a rating scale question, go to the menu and select ‘Question Module’. Click on ‘Ranking Question’.

The question will now appear on the page.

Under ‘Ranking Type’, you can choose from three options:

  • Check box: Users can select an answer with text, such as “strongly disagree.”
  • Stars: Users can assign a number of stars to a question.
  • Slider: Users can indicate their agreement level using a slider.

Adding Options

Check box

By default, the checkbox is selected when you add the question. You can adjust the question and answers, and then customize the question’s style as desired.

Stars

Select ‘Stars’ under ‘Ranking Style’. You can then adjust the question and specify how many stars you want. For example, using Option 1 through Option 5 allows users to choose from 5 stars. Note: The stars will only be visible in the preview.

Slider

Select ‘Slider’ under ‘Ranking Style’. You can then adjust the question and specify how many points you want on the slider. By default, there are 3, but you can adjust this as needed. The more options you provide, the more precise the slider becomes. In the example below, 5 options are given, allowing users to select points between “strongly disagree” and “neutral,” and between “neutral” and “strongly agree.” Note: The slider will only be visible in the preview.

Customizing the Style

There are several options for customizing the style of the question. You can adjust the font, font size, text style, and color, as well as the background color, alignment, and rounding.

For example, you can change the ‘Fill Color’ to black and ‘Text Color’ to white, and adjust the font and size. In a Stars question, you can change the background color of the stars with ‘Fill Color’ and the color of the selected stars with ‘Selected Color’. For the Slider, you can only change the background color of the slider with ‘Fill Color’.

Scoring Answer Options

The first answer option always starts at 0%. Depending on the total number of answer options, each subsequent answer is assigned a higher percentage.

For example:

  • Strongly dissatisfied: 0%
  • Dissatisfied: 25%
  • Neutral: 50%
  • Satisfied: 75%
  • Strongly satisfied: 100%

These percentages are evenly distributed among the answer options.

If you assign a score to the question, the points are distributed based on the percentage of the selected answer. For instance, if a question is worth 10 points, the scores would be as follows:

  • Strongly dissatisfied: 0% – score of 0
  • Dissatisfied: 25% – score of 2.5
  • Neutral: 50% – score of 5
  • Satisfied: 75% – score of 7.5
  • Strongly satisfied: 100% – score of 10
